Assistant Professor: Public Health

Thomas More University is a private, Catholic, liberal arts institution located in the metropolitan Cincinnati area.  The University is student-oriented, and teaching is our primary focus.  Thomas More has a reputation for excellent education, community commitment, and student success, and takes pride in offering students an exceptional academic experience with small classes and committed faculty and staff. Thomas More serves approximately 2000 full- and part-time students on its beautiful campus in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.

We invite applications from candidates who are doctorally qualified for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. This position is for an additional faculty member due to the growth of the public health program. Appointments will begin in August 2024. Faculty are expected to demonstrate a commitment to teaching excellence, service to the university, an on-going program of research and publications, presentations at conferences, and collaboration with students on projects. Faculty actively participate in student advising and mentoring, recruitment and retention, the building of community partnerships, engagement in program assessment, the hiring of colleagues, accreditation processes, and the creation of opportunities for student-faculty collaborative research/service opportunities.

Program Overview

Appointed faculty will work in the Public Health Program within the Department of Health Sciences within the St. Elizabeth College of Natural & Health Sciences. The Public Health program at Thomas More University seeks to develop the next generation of public health practitioners, leaders and scientists to promote health equity through academic excellence, innovative research opportunities, community engaged outreach activities, and professional development. The Public Health program currently offers a master’s in public health (MPH) and an undergraduate minor in public health. The public health program launched in August 2023 and offers in-person and online courses. Many of the MPH courses are offered in an 8-week format. There are plans for continued programmatic growth which include enrollment expansion, Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) accreditation and the development of graduate certificate programs.


Qualifications

The appointee must have an interest in promoting the Public Health program and will be expected to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses in public health. The Assistant Professor of Public Health must be capable of effectively teaching public health policy, administration, and law, public health communication, community health, global health, applied public health courses (e.g., internship and research), and electives based on course demand.

 

Candidates for the Assistant Professor of Public Health must hold a doctoral degree in Public Health (DrPH or PhD) or a related field and a Master of Public Health from a regionally accredited university. Degree at time of application or official notification of completion of the doctorate by August 1, 2024, is required. Candidates must be committed to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.

 

 

Additional Required Qualifications

 

  • Strong interpersonal skills, effective communication skills, and the ability to work cooperatively and congenially with faculty colleagues are required
  • Commitment to programmatic growth, recruitment, and retention
  • Demonstrated potential for teaching courses in the public health field through evidence-based teaching strategies
  • Demonstrated potential for conducting research and publishing scholarship
  • Demonstrated commitment to working collaboratively with colleagues in related departments and with a diverse student population 

 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • National Association for Health Education Credentialing (NCHEC) Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) or Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES) certification
  • Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) proficiency
  • Demonstrated potential or willingness to engage in research focused on achieving health equity for underserved populations
  • Interest in applying for external funding

Duties

  • Develop and teach high-quality graduate and undergraduate courses in public health in topics such as public health policy, administration, and law, public health communication, and community health
  • Support students through internship placement, professional development, and research projects
  • Apply for external funding to support a research agenda with high-quality outcomes leading to academic publications and discipline-specific conferences which may benefit diverse populations
  • Participate in CEPH accreditation processes
  • Share in program activities, including student advising and mentorship, curriculum assessment, and student recruitment/admissions
  • Work collaboratively with others in the department, college, university and community.
  • Engage in activities that support diversity, equity, and inclusion on campus, in local and global communities, and the profession
  • Participate in service to the department, college, university, community, and profession
