Assistant Director of International Student Services

Purpose: This position is responsible for the coordination, implementation and operations of the Universities J-1
exchange and visitor program. The ISS Coordinator oversees the programmatic, operational, and fiscal management
of International Student Support. Supporting our international students and engaging them into the Thomas More
community. Essential skills include attention to detail, high energy and willingness to accept responsibility over a
wide range of programs. The coordinator will be expected to serve as a Designated Schools Official (DSO) for the
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program administered through the
Department of State (DOS).

• Assist international student population in integrating to the college community and assimilating to the U.S.
educational system
• Helps recently admitted students to navigate post-admissions processes, including but not limited to
admissions deposit and setting up payment plan, submitting I-20 request documentation, departmental, and
international orientations; submitting proper paperwork needed as a student of Thomas More
• Liaisons and collaborates with other Student Services departments on campus to ensure the needs of
international students are being met
• Coordinates communication and outreach to degree-seeking international students of both undergraduate and
graduate programs through the enrollment process to
• Analyze and interpret student data, transcripts and placement results and apply college policy and
• Handle pre-arrival communication with prospective students and answer questions regarding visa
support letters and process
• Interpret and follow detailed international, federal, state, and college rules, procedures, and regulations.
• Assist students via phone, email and in-person with basic career exploration, goal setting, educational
planning, and course selection
• The position will be responsible for SEVIS reporting, compliance, and student/scholar case
management and will need to liaise with Professional Advising, Student Affairs & Success, faculty,
staff, and other relevant stakeholders

• The position will also need to provide general support for international students, their families and
make appropriate referrals to students/family requiring professional help
• This position will assist with the development and implementation of unit programs including
immigration check-in, workshops, retreats and other social/cultural programs
• Knowledge and experience with SEVP and J-1 Exchange Visitor Programs

Excellent oral and written communications skills. Demonstrated ability to collaborate and build partnerships across
divisional lines; ability to work effectively and ethically across cultural differences. Experience in program planning
and development. Understanding of University policies and procedures, manage multiple tasks and problem
solver. Motivate and support students, members and leaders of student organizations, and staff in the development
of programs and activities.
Employ evidence-based best practices to implement and evaluate programs and services, maintain effectiveness,
including cultural, intellectual, social, judicial, residential and recreational events that contribute to the learning and
development of students.
Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree in higher education, counseling, or related field preferred
Minimum Experience: 2-4 years’ experience in higher education required preferably in the areas of Student
Support Services, Student Affairs, and Enrollment.
