Dean of Student Diversity, Engagement, and Success

Thomas More University, a Catholic diocesan university in northern Kentucky, seeks to appoint a of Dean of Student Diversity, Engagement, and Success (DES). The Dean will oversee functions and offices which support the mission and core values of the University by providing programs that prepare students for success in their academic and co-curricular programs and for service and leadership within their communities after graduation. Encompassing curricular and co-curricular functions, offices which report to the Dean of DES will collaborate to champion student diversity, engagement, academic achievement, and long-term success for students through graduate study or careers.

The Dean of DES reports to the University Provost and serves on the Provost’s Council of Deans and the Academic Leadership Team. The DES will also serve on the President’s Cabinet.

Offices and functions overseen by the Dean include Advisement and Coaching, Counseling and Health Services, Transfer Services, Tutoring Support, Internship Coordination, helping students apply to graduate schools, Career Counseling, Student Activities, Residential life, student orientations and student judicial procedures. Many of these functions are led by talented individuals committed to serving TMU’s mission and goals. Specifically, the Dean will oversee Student Activities, Residential Life, Health Services, and the Thomas More Student Success Center.

The Dean is also expected to work closely with the Provost and QEP Director to implement the University’s plans for Quality Enhancement centered on student advising and support. As part of this plan, the University is developing a team-based approach to advising and mentoring which will take effect from fall 2021.

The Dean will maintain a visible presence on campus and

  • lead efforts across offices and functions to develop and implement strategies to improve student retention and success and provides leadership in assessing and refining retention efforts;
  • plan, implement and evaluate a comprehensive student support services program designed to enhance the experience of all students at the University;
  • oversee staff with primary responsibility for student orientation programs, academic and co-curricular advising, counseling, internships, transfer procedures, career support, guidance for graduate study, student activities, and residential life;
  • support the development of student-driven clubs and organizations and advocates on behalf of student leaders and clubs;
  • develop programs and initiatives that foster a diverse and engaged community of learners who experience a sense of belonging, care, and support at Thomas More;
  • supervise administrative processes, including budget preparation and monitoring operational budgets;
  • develop a coherent vision for offices that aligns closely with the University’s Strategic Plan and goals;
  • work closely with the Provost and members of her leadership team to integrate academic and co-curricular functions into seamless support for student success;
  • lead workshops and trainings to promote staff professional development;

Education & Experience

Master's degree required, preferably in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs Administration, or related field. A terminal degree is desirable.

  • Prior experience in using student management system tools.
  • Knowledge of local, state and federal statutory requirements pertaining to higher education;
  • Ability to write grants to develop and expand student service programs;
  • Passion for coaching and mentoring staff towards optimal performance;
  • Exceptional team building skills;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with ability to effectively articulate the mission and vision of Thomas More University.

 

Applications must include a cover letter responding to the position profile and addressing knowledge and experience in the core professional competencies for Student Affairs professionals as defined by NASPA, a resume, and a list of four references who will be contacted once quarterfinalists are identified for a first interview. Evaluation of materials will begin on March 15th, 2021 and continue until a finalist is identified. The expected start date is June 1st, 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter at a mutually agreed-upon date.
