Purpose

The Instructor & Laboratory Coordinator - Biological Sciences position is a 12-month non-tenure track, special appointed faculty position consisting of teaching and lab coordinator responsibilities.

This position requires a full-time commitment of 37.5 hours per week. Hours spent teaching laboratory courses are contained within that number of hours per week; however, the balance of the time remaining should be spent on laboratory coordinator activities. Because of the nature and timing of laboratory courses (some labs start at 8:30AM; some labs end at 9:00PM) in the department, the exact daily schedule will be dictated by the semester-by-semester nature of the courses offered in the department. Flexibility is required by the position while flexibility is also provided by the department in any given week (and especially in summer).

Instructor duties will be satisfied by teaching a total of six laboratory sections per year, with a particular emphasis on the Anatomy & Physiology I and II sequence. The identity of specific courses and frequency at which courses are assigned will be determined in consultation with the Department Chairperson and the departmental staffing needs. Laboratory Coordinator duties include (a) supervising work-study students, (b) overseeing laboratory activities in the department (e.g. the preparation, setup, and breakdown of laboratory sessions), (c) handling purchase orders, and (d) managing general upkeep of the departmental spaces.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervising of work-study and other student employees in the Department of Biological Sciences; determination of their work-schedules and tasks to be accomplished.
  • Keeping all inventories current in the department: equipment, chemicals, preserved specimens, glassware, microscopic slides, audio-visual materials, etc. Periodically, such inventories, especially equipment, must be updated and submitted to the Business Office for insurance purposes; also outdated and outmoded materials need to be destroyed/removed from circulation.
  • Handling all purchase orders after Chairperson’s approval of order – typing up of order as requested or as known to be a need, submitting to Business Office (or called in after securing P.O. number), receiving of shipment on arrival, and notifying concerned faculty member of availability, as well as making changes in inventory if necessary.
  • Maintaining labs and lab equipment (e.g., general lab cleanliness, proper stocking/storage of supplies, cleaning refrigerators and freezers regularly, cleaning microscopes).
  • Repairing equipment and arranging for periodic standardization; if possible, doing on own or with help of knowledgeable faculty, or having maintenance department doing the needed repair, or requesting professional outside help.
  • Responsible for setup of laboratory exercises as requested by individual faculty members for respective course or delegating to and/or directing a student worker in doing the same; besides immediate setup in laboratory, this may involve preparation of solutions, microbiological media, etc.
  • Responsible for the breakdown of a particular laboratory setup, once lab is completed, and seeing to the proper disposal of used materials, replacement thereof if necessary, return of non-disposable materials to proper storage, and cleanup of glassware and lab furniture.
  • Caring for live specimens, as plants in the greenhouse and animals in prep rooms for use in the labs as well as those plants and animals in display areas and the hall.
  • Promoting actively the provision of the means and the observance of safety regulations in all laboratories and procedures.
  • Responsible for recycling program (in Department of Biological Sciences)
  • Responsible for general upkeep of the Biological Sciences Department (Floor). Making information available through timely and appropriate changes in display case and bulletin boards. Stocking supply closets, brochures, upkeep of conference room, lobby area, hallways, prep room, etc.
  • Budget responsibilities. Keep track of departmental supply and grant expenses, done in conjunction with Department Chairperson.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must have a Masters degree (or higher) – in theoretical or applied Biology, or Life Sciences
  • Educational background and experience must be approved by the program director as satisfying accreditation requirements
  • Must be familiar with basic laboratory protocols for a biology laboratory
  • Have experience working in a laboratory setting
  • Possess a familiarity with a variety of biological laboratory techniques and equipment in the fields of molecular/cellular biology (e.g., genetics), organismal biology (e.g., microbiology), and/or ecological (botany) biology.
  • Prior teaching experience, particularly experience at the College level (and in the area of Anatomy & Physiology)
  • Must have knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  •  Have excellent written and oral communication skills in all duties
  •  Be willing to work collegially with all faculty in the department
  •  Be flexible in scheduling
  •  Be capable of maintaining professional and collegial relationships with students, colleagues, and the college community.
